A story behind the celebration of holi (holika dahan, dhulandi) is madan-dahan event. Shankar ji (the creator)was performing tapasaya from decades because he lost his wife named Sati devi.

On the other hand, Tarkasura gained a boon from Brahma ji by performing penance i.e. tarkasura can only be killed by Shankar's son. he was so cruel that after getting the boon, he started disturbing the public on earth, he removed the Indra ji and other devtas from indralok. looking at all this Brahma ji told the solution to the problem to the devtas, he told only shankar’s son can kill Tarkasura. so go to Shankar ji and break his penance in whatever possible ways.

All the devtas decided and gave the job of breaking the tapasaya of Shankar ji to Kamadeva (wishes ke devta) and Rati (devi).kaamdev and Rati devi made their mind to go to Shankar ji to sought out the problem. they both reached kailash mountain and saw that shankar ji is fully dedicated to tapasaya. so they decided to wake him up by disturbing through different modes. one mode was dancing to their tunes, the other was to shot arrows at Shankar ji.

So they started the same. they kept on dancing for hours and days then, as a result, Shankar ji was getting disturbed. but that was not enough to wake him up. so Kaamdev and Rati kept on doing whatever they can do to disturb Shankar ji. one day Kaamdev shot the bunch of arrows(many arrows) at an instant on Shankar ji. as a result, Shankar ji’s meditation (tapasaya) broke out and his third eye opened. as soon as the third eye opened, Kaamdev was bhasm (ash) by the flame directed via the third eye.on the other hand, Parvati ji (devi) was performing tapasaya to get married to Shankar ji.

Now as the penance of Shankar ji was broken, as a result Shankar ji and Parvati ji got married and they had a son named kartikane who then killed Tarkasura. in this way, madan dahan via Shankar ji became the reason to celebrate holi.
